Make a PDF more accessible (PDF/UA)
Make a PDF work better with screen readers.
Or drop a PDF here. Files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
The tool checks the document against the PDF/UA requirements a program can test, then sets the title and language, tags untagged content as a first draft and stores the descriptions you write for pictures. It checks and converts, but it is not a certification: accessibility also needs a person to review the result.
How to make a PDF more accessible (PDF/UA)
- Choose the PDF you want to make accessible.
- Read the problems the check found and the list of things only a person can verify.
- Select Fix automatically, then enter the title, the language and a description for each picture.
- Review what remains, then select Download.
What you get
You describe the pictures
Each picture that needs alternative text is shown with a box to describe it. The tool never invents a description; a picture left blank stays reported as a problem.
Tags as a first draft
Untagged pages get paragraph and heading tags worked out from the text. An existing tag structure is kept as it is and never overwritten.
Says what needs a human
Reading order, table headers, meaningful descriptions and colour contrast cannot be verified by a program. The report says so plainly.
Clear about its limits
The result reads “passes this tool's checks”, never more, and lists what was not checked.
Accessible PDF: questions and answers
Is the result a compliant PDF/UA file?
Not by this tool's word alone. It tests and fixes the requirements a program can test. PDF/UA also requires things only a person can judge, such as whether the reading order and the descriptions make sense. Have the file reviewed and validated when conformance is required.
What if my PDF is a scan?
A scan is a picture of text. Run text recognition (OCR) first so there is text to tag; the recognised text should be proofread.
Can I keep editing after the conversion?
Yes, but content you add or change afterwards is not tagged. Run the tool again before you share the file.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The check and the conversion run in your browser.
