Unlock a PDF and remove its password
Save a copy of a protected PDF that opens without a password.
Or drop a PDF here. Files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
You must know the password: this tool does not guess, crack or recover one. Choose the file, type its password once, and download the same document with the protection removed. The file and the password stay on your device.
How to unlock a PDF and remove its password
- Select Choose a protected PDF and pick the file.
- Type the password that opens the document.
- Select Unlock. The file is decrypted in your browser.
- Select Download unlocked PDF, or open the copy in the editor.
What you get
For passwords you know
The password is needed to decrypt the file. Without it nothing can be read, here or anywhere else.
The same document, without the lock
Pages, text, images, form fields and bookmarks are kept. Only the encryption and the restrictions are removed.
The password never leaves your device
Decryption runs in your browser. Neither the file nor the password is sent to a server.
Carry on in the editor
Open the unlocked copy in the editor to edit, sign or merge it straight away.
Unlock PDF: questions and answers
Can this open a PDF when I have forgotten the password?
No. A password-protected PDF is encrypted, and this tool does not try to guess or break passwords. You need the password that opens the document.
What happens when I type the wrong password?
The tool says that the password did not work and lets you try again. The file is not changed.
Does it remove restrictions on printing and copying?
Yes. The copy is saved without encryption, so it carries no restrictions. Only do this for documents you are allowed to change.
Is my password uploaded?
No. The password is used inside your browser to decrypt the file and is not stored or sent anywhere.
