Password protect a PDF
Lock a PDF so that it can only be opened with a password.
Or drop a PDF here. Files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
The file is encrypted with AES-256 on your own device. Because nothing is uploaded, neither the document nor the password you choose leaves your browser.
How to password protect a PDF
- Open the PDF you want to protect.
- Choose Protect with a password and enter a password.
- Select Download to save the encrypted PDF.
- Share the password with the recipient separately from the file.
What you get
AES-256 encryption
The document is encrypted with a 256-bit AES key, the strongest option in the PDF standard.
Encrypted before it leaves you
Protection is applied locally, so an unprotected copy is never sent over the network.
Opens in standard PDF readers
Recipients enter the password in their usual PDF reader to open the file.
Protect PDF: questions and answers
How strong is the protection?
The file is encrypted with AES-256. In practice its strength depends on your password, so use a long one that is hard to guess.
What happens if I forget the password?
The password cannot be recovered, because it is never stored or sent anywhere. Keep the original, unprotected file somewhere safe.
Is the password sent to a server?
No. Encryption happens in your browser and the password stays on your device.
