Compress a PDF without uploading it

Shrink a PDF so it fits an email or uploads faster.

Files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

The tool lowers the resolution of images that are larger than they need to be, merges duplicate fonts and images, and drops data nothing uses. It all runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to compress a PDF without uploading it

  1. Choose the PDF you want to make smaller.
  2. Pick Screen, Ebook or Print quality, or set the resolution and JPEG quality yourself.
  3. Select Compress and wait while the images are reduced.
  4. Check the before and after size, then select Download.

What you get

  • Three presets and a custom setting

Screen brings images to 96 dpi, Ebook to 150 dpi and Print to 300 dpi. Custom lets you choose both the resolution and the JPEG quality.

  • Only images that are too large are touched

An image already at or below the chosen resolution is left exactly as it is, and an image is replaced only when the new version is smaller.

  • Honest about the result

You see the size before and after and what was done. If the file cannot be made smaller, the tool says so instead of handing you a bigger one.

  • Text stays text

Text and vector drawings are not turned into pictures, so the page stays sharp and searchable.

Compress PDF: questions and answers

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is in it. A PDF full of photos or scans at high resolution can shrink by half or much more. A PDF that is mostly text has little to remove, and the saving may be a few percent.

Will the quality get worse?

Images above the resolution you pick are scaled down and saved as JPEG, which loses some detail. Screen is the smallest and softest, Print keeps the most. Text and line drawings are not affected.

Which images are left alone?

Images with transparency and images in formats the tool cannot rewrite safely are kept as they are and counted as skipped in the result.

Is my file uploaded to be compressed?

No. The compression runs in your browser on your own device.
